Lauritz Johan Travland / Lewis Joseph Travland death

Here is a newspaper article regarding the injury Lewis Joseph Travland (his Norwegian name: Lauritz Johan Travland) received which led to his death.     The front page of The San Antonio Light reported the incident in their October 21, 1916 edition.

The newspaper article is dated October 21, 1916 but the death certificate according to his great granddaughter Trish Hodgens, records the death as October 20, 1916.

Lewis was born Lauritz Johan Pederson Travland on December 21, 1949 to Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.    His baptism record was posted here and his confirmation record, also confirming his date of birth was posted here.

His Americanized name was Lewis (occasionally seen spelled Louis) Joseph Pederson Travland, however the use of the Norwegian naming system also came into play such as in the above news article:   L. P. Travland which represented Lewis Pederson (or Americanized, 'Peterson') Travland, Pederson derived from his father's first name, Peder.

I previously posted two photographs of Lewis here and here and also posted his death here.

John Otto Travland and Lena Josephine Travland

John Otto Travland and his cousin, Lena Josephine Travland were baptized June 30, 1878 in Lee county, Illinois.    The record spells his name 'Johan' and confirms John's birthdate as March 25, 1878.   The spelling for Lena's is written as 'Lina' and lists her birthdate as April 23, 1878.  The 1900 US Census indicates Lena's birth was March 1878.    The Cook county, Illinois death records list her birth as March 24th.   The grave marker indicates March 24, 1878.    The baptism record appears to be incorrect.

While the record comes from the Methodist Episcopal Church, the document doesn't indicate if the baptism occurred at the church.  Previous baptism entries stated 'Steward', where the church is located.

John Otto's entry can be found on the 10th line and Lena Josephine's is located on the 11th line.

John Otto Travland was the son of Susanne* (Iversdatter) and Peter Peterson Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Lena Josephine Travland was the daughter of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Between the 4 Travland sons born to Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland, there were two Lena Josephine's.    The Lena Josephine Travland referenced in the baptism above preceded her cousin, Lena Josephine Travland by 10 years.

The younger Lena Josephine Travland was the third child born to Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland (following the death of Lewis' first wife, Iverdine Finnestad) and the granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.    Iverdine (Finnestad) Travland was the daughter of Mari (Iversdatter) Finnestad and the niece of Susanne (Iversdatter) Travland.

The baptism documents were provided from the records of the Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today and is located at 507 Main Street.    It is currently named the Steward United Methodist Church.   A little bit of history about the church can be found here.  Scroll down to the bottom and look for 'Steward Methodist Church'.

*Susanne (Iversdatter) was the younger sister of Mari (Iversdatter Nord-Skaar).

Inga Travland and Otto Travland baptisms

Inga Travland and cousin Otto Travland were baptized on December 23, 1883 in Lee county, Illinois.   The baptism document was provided from Methodist Episcopal Church but previous entries stated Steward which is located in Lee county.    I do not know whether the baptism occurred in Steward at the church or another location in Lee county, Illinois.    The church record indicates Inga was born August 28, 1883 and her cousin, Otto Travland was born on November 9, 1883.

Inga's entry can be found on the 3rd line and Otto's is located on the 4th line.

Inga Travland was the first child born to Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland (following the death of Lewis' first wife, Iverdine Finnestad) and the granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Otto Travland was the son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Martin Travland - Obituary

Here is an obituary for Martin Travland, son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

The headstone and the filing with the Veterans Administration indicates the date of death was a day prior, August 13, 1969.

Like all documents, errors are made.    It's best to verify with corroborating documents though that isn't always possible the further back in time we look.

Martin Travland - Baptism

Here is the baptism record for Martin Travland, son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Martin's baptism is the 6th entry listed.     He was baptized on March 13, 1887 in Steward, Lee county, Illinois at the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Methodist Episcopal Church still stands today and is located at 507 Main Street.   It is currently named the Steward United Methodist Church.   A little bit of history about the church can be found here.  Scroll down to the bottom and look for 'Steward Methodist Church'.

What is interesting about this baptism record is what is missing.   Review the second entry, a baptism that took place June 20, 1886.    No name is listed but it does include the parent's entry of Lewis Travland but the mother is excluded as is the date of birth.    Lewis was the second child born to Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland; he was baptized in Norway in 1850 so possibly he had a second baptism.    It might have been for the cousin of Martin Travland, Martin Lewis Travland.

If it was for Martin Lewis Travland, the second child born to Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland (following the death of Lewis' first wife, Iverdine Finnestad) the baptism took place in Lee, Lee county, Illinois on June 20, 1886.  Martin Lewis Travland was born October 15, 1885.   I have reviewed the documents and unless a page is missing, I've not encountered a listing for Martin Lewis Travland, son of Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland, so I'm inclined to believe this may be his baptism record.

Lena's entry can be found on the 5th line and Wesley's is located on the 9th line.

Lena Josephine Travland was the third child born to Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland (following the death of Lewis' first wife, Iverdine Finnestad) and the granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Wesley Travland was the son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Lena and Wesley's cousins, Alma Elizabeth and Orville Ilin Olson were also baptized by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Steward.

Orville and Alma were the first two children born to Mary (Knutson) and Stephen Olson, and were the grandchildren of Elizabeth (Finnestad) and Ole Andreas Knutson and the first two great-grandchildren of Mari (Iversdatter Nord-Skaar) and Ole (Olson) Finnestad Sr.

The Methodist Episcopal Church still stands today and is located at 507 Main Street and is currently named the Steward United Methodist Church.   A little bit of history about the church can be found here.  Scroll down to the bottom and look for 'Steward Methodist Church'.
